Screen usage and other near-distance activities have increasingly become a part of life for many children and teens, whether at home or at school. Since it has become unavoidable, it is important to acknowledge and minimize the vision health related risks associated with prolonged screen time.

 

According to recent studies, extended screen time and decreased exposure to natural light illumination (resulting from lack of outdoor activities) are significant risk factors for myopia progression. Despite this, digital devices do not offer objective and efficient tools to prevent myopic progression caused by screen usage. In addition, these devices do not deliver any effective solutions to monitor computer vision quality, dry eye symptoms, or reading ability.

To address the unmet need for myopia prevention and vision health monitoring, NovaSight is developing TrackSight, a software as a service (SaaS) solution utilizing computer monitors’ embedded webcams to perform eye-tracking. This solution is designed to run on laptops and tablets used for educational, professional, and leisure purposes.

 

Myopia prevention is achieved by blurring the peripheral area of the screen while keeping the center of vision clear according to the momentary gaze position. Thanks to sophisticated algorithms allowing real time eye tracking based on embedded webcams, the blur is unnoticeable to the user.

 

In addition, the system continuously tracks eye movement performance to detect eye fatigue and additional vision health risk factors.
